The Oscar committee has started the selection process for India’s official entry. Soon, around 20 entries will be sent from across the country. Films like ‘Ghoomer’ and ‘The Kerala Story’ are also said to be in the running. According to media reports, these two films have been sent to the Film Federation of India for Oscar consideration as part of the women-centric films category for 2023.
Other Contenders:
Besides these, Ananth Mahadevan’s ‘The Storyteller’ is also seen as a strong contender, based on a short story by Satyajit Ray. Additionally, Nandita Das’ ‘Jwigatesh’, starring Kapil Sharma, is also in discussions. A few Marathi and Telugu films are also said to be in the race.
Media reports suggest that if the Marathi film ‘Valvi’ manages to impress the selection committee, it also stands a good chance of being sent. Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ’12th Fail’ is also among the shortlisted films. Screenings have started in Chennai and the final selections are expected to be announced by September 23.
Past Oscar Winners:
Last year, Pan Nalin’s ‘Chhello Show’ was selected as India’s official Oscar entry. Before that, films like Mother India, Lagaan and RRR have earned spots at the Academy Awards. RRR’s song ‘Naatu Naatu’ made history by staking a claim at the Oscars. It won at the 95th Academy Awards, becoming the first Indian song to win an Oscar.
