Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is the first big budget film to release in theatres, after the third wave of Corona subsided. Ever since the announcement of this film, all eyes were on the Alia Bhatt starrer and as expected the film did well at the box office.
Gangubai will come on OTT on this day
During the Corona epidemic, the makers used to premiere the film on the OTT platform only four weeks after its release in theatres. However, the makers of Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ have decided that they will release the film on the digital platform only after completing eight weeks in theatres. That is, the OTT premiere of Gangubai Kathiawadi, released on February 25, will be done on Netflix on April 22, 2022.
Rule of Multiplex
Let us tell you that before the epidemic, it was mandatory that a film would be released on a digital platform only after completing 8 weeks in theatres. Some films like ‘Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana’ (2017) and ‘1921’ (2018) tried to reach OTT before 8 weeks. After which, the multiplexes refused to release these films. In view of this, the makers agreed to follow the eight-week rule on the day of release, and the film was released in theatres in the afternoon.
Kangana’s film was boycotted during the Corona pandemic
However, during the pandemic, national multiplexes had agreed to allow the films to be released on streaming platforms within four weeks. But, some producers had demanded that his film should be allowed to premiere on OTT within two weeks as it would generate more revenue. Kangana Ranaut starrer Thalaivi (2021) released on Netflix in just two weeks despite being denied permission, leading to boycotts by major multiplex chains. It was released only in single-screen and some standalone multiplexes. Recently, Sanjay Dutt-starrer Toolsidas Junior (2022) also saw a similar limited release, as it reportedly will hit Netflix before four weeks.
