Ayushmannn Khurrana’s film ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’, which is an out-of-the-box film, can prove to be a milestone in the case of gay films. In Bollywood, gay relationships have been shown many times before, but in most films it has either been stereotyped in a mild and funny manner or in films like Fire, Aligarh, the life of a gay person has been shown very seriously. However, this film of Ayushmannn is different in the way that it not only tries to normalize the gay relationships in small cities but also shows the perceptions spread in the society about it.
Story
Shankar Tripathi (Gajraj Rao) is a scientist and invents to make black cabbage, due to which the Protest of farmers at his house also continues. His son Aman (Jitendra) is working in Delhi and is in a relationship with Karthik (Ayushmannn). Shankar has a full family. His younger brother Chaman is a lawyer and the whole family gathers for the wedding of Chaman’s daughter Gogal.
Aman arrives with Karthik for the wedding of uncle’s girl. During the dance, both of them kiss. Seeing this, Shankar start vomiting. After this, the whole family comes to know that Aman is gay. At first, the Tripathi family considers it a disease and tries hard to convince Aman, but in the end how Aman manages to convince his family, this is the story of the film.
Direction
Serve the serious issue in front of the audience with the help of taboo subject, small town climate and comedy. Ayushmannn has succeeded in gaining popularity among the audience with the help of this formula in the recent past. However, he seems to have missed a bit at the level of the script in this film.
Directed by Hitesh Kevalya, this film is successful in breaking stereotypes of homosexuality, but in the film you know what is going to happen next and in this case this film does not surprise you at any level due to which the film has a little dullness. Ayushmannn’s exuberance in the first half of the film also seems incomprehensible and there are some sequences in the film where you realize that the film is moving away from realty but the film’s impressive star cast and tremendous comic dialogues are quite entertaining. If there was a little more sharpening in the editing of this film, then this film could have become quite spectacular.
Acting
Ayushmannn Khurrana is an effortless artist and in this film he appears to be doing the same. Although his over expression does not make sense in the first half of the film, Jitendra Kumar chants as a troubled youth. However, in this film, more than the lead star cast, the remaining cast of the film is a treat to watch.
All the actors have got a lot of space in this film unlike the films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and they have managed to take full advantage of this opportunity. Gajraj Rao as Shankar Tripathi and Neena Gupta as his wife once again entertain the audience a lot with their chemistry. The same Manurishi Chaddha as uncle and Sunita Rajwar as aunt have done amazing comedy. Sunita Rajwar outweighs all the other actors in many scenes and her comic timing is excellent. There are many sequences in the film where the debate between the two brothers turns into memorable scenes.
