‘Hawa Singh’ is a biopic of the world famous boxer Hawa Singh and in this biopic Suraj Pancholi is playing the role of ‘Hawa Singh’. ‘Hawa Singh’ is also known as Father of Indian Boxing. ‘Hawa Singh’ biopic is directed by Prakash Nambiar and the film is being produced by Sam S Fernandes and Kamlesh Singh Kushwaha.
Talking about the ‘Hawa Singh’ biopic, director Prakash explains, ‘The story of Hawa Singh is inspiring, it is the story of a young man who belongs to a small village. The son of Hawa Singh has given training to Suraj Pancholi for the role. Captain ‘Hawa Singh’ was born on 16 December 1937 in Umarwas village of Bhiwani district in Haryana. Hawa Singh joined the Indian Army at the age of 19 and started boxing there. In 1960, he won the Western Command title by defeating the then champion Mohabbat Singh.
Hawa Singh won the National Boxing Championship consecutively from 1961 to 1972. No other Indian boxer has been able to match this record of Hawa Singh till date. Hawa Singh has earned a name at the international level too. Hawa Singh was the first Indian boxing player to go for a boxing tournament in the Asian Games held in Jakarta in 1962. By winning a gold medal in the Asian Games held in 1966, he showed the whole world that India is no less than anyone.
Hawa Singh also won a gold medal in the Asian Games of 1970. Hawa Singh is the only Indian boxer to have won two gold medals for boxing at the Asian Games. Due to his success in 1966, the Government of India honored him with the ‘Arjuna Award’ and in 1968 the President of the Indian Army awarded him the ‘Best Sportsman Trophy’. The third generation in the family of Hawa Singh is also pushing the sport of boxing.
