‘Rangeela Girl’ Urmila Matondkar celebrates her birthday on 4 February. Born in Mumbai, Urmila started her acting career as a child artist. She made her debut in the Marathi film ‘Jhakola’ (1980). ‘Kalyug’ (1981) was her first Hindi film.
In the Hindi cinema world, Urmila got recognition from the film ‘Masoom’. Her song ‘Lakdi Ki Kathi, Kathi Pe Ghoda’ in the film is still famous today. Urmila has worked not only in Hindi but also in Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films. Urmila’s first film as an actress was ‘Narasimha’ with director N Chandra.
Urmila got her real identity from director Ram Gopal Varma’s film ‘Rangeela’ released in 1995. The film stars Urmila alongside Aamir Khan and Jackie Shroff in the lead. Urmila gave very bold scenes in the film. Urmila was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the film.
Urmila worked with Ram Gopal Varma in films like ‘Satya’, ‘Jungle’, ‘Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya’ and ‘Bhoot’. On one hand, Urmila’s career got a high flight due to Ram Gopal Varma but Urmila is said to have suffered the brunt of this too. Many Bollywood directors refused to take Urmila into films. According to the news, Urmila could not get any support when Ramu also turned her back for some reason. Urmila’s entire film career was ruined and she disappeared from the industry.
Urmila married Kashmiri businessman and model Mohsin Akhtar Mir in 2016. Urmila married secretly. Mohsin is 10 years younger than Urmila. These days, Urmila is busy with her married life.
Urmila started the political journey in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. She joined the Congress party in the general election. She had contested from Mumbai North seat. She was pitted against BJP MP Gopal Shetty. Urmila was defeated in this election. Shortly after losing the election, the actress resigned from the Congress party.
