The flame of light at the other end of every dark tunnel. In the time of films like Housefull 4 and Ghost Stories, Chhapak works wonder. Chhapak is a sound that occurs when a fluid is thrown. If this liquid is an acid sold in stores and if a target is a young woman who dares to say no, then its voice changes one’s world. But, Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapak is not a story of crying, it is a story of fighting with time.
Salute Deepika with some of the world’s most beautiful faces, for doing a film that creates such a definition of beauty. Chhapak is the story of Malati. Malti can be any one of the crores of girls in half the population. She can be any girl in our home or neighborhood who wants to move forward and dare not say the street’s prominence in the way of doing something in life. A splash changes her world. But Malti does not go into hiding without hiding her face. She finds Amol, a shoulder-to-shoulder friend, and he comes out on the front of a battle in which the story of her victory is written by the Supreme Court of India, the country with the most cases of acid attacks in the world.
The film Chhapak is the milestone in the career of Deepika Padukone, which is trying to color the political atmosphere of the country. Film critics are being told by phone that Deepika’s going to Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University is a publicity stunt and should see this film in this perspective. But, Deepika, who has the courage to churn the whole country without saying anything on an issue, is not just Deepika. This is the film of every young woman who has dreamed of doing something. This dream is the victory of this film. Deepika is just a medium to spread this message. Deepika has silently drawn a long streak that is so long that its marks have become permanent before reaching the end of attempts to shorten it. This character has the power to win her the National Film Award for Best Actor.
Apart from Deepika, Vikrant Massey has made an impact in this film. In the film Sanju, just as Vicky Kaushal had gathered all the applause, Vikrant has done something similar here. Nobody expected much from him in front of an artist like Deepika, but he is a surprise package of this film. The rest of the actors in the film are newcomers, some real acid attack victims have also done amazing work in it. Even after leaving the film, the scenes are still printed in the mind in which Deepika moves her scarf in the air or where her dimple face in an acid scorched face also brings a smile on the face of the audience.
Meghna Gulzar can do this alchemy to bring a smile on the face of the audience even after watching the story of a young woman who is suffering from acid attack. Through her previous films Raazi and Talwar, she has proved that on topical subjects she can tell a story directly and truthfully without any artificiality. Meghna’s films are also reminiscent of some of her father’s films like Mere Apne, Aandhi, Machis, etc., the same relationships, the same social challenges and the same uneasiness within the main character. Chhapak also makes the audience restless. If films were ever called a mirror of society, then Chhapak has managed to become its golden frame. In the movie review, the film Chhapak gets four stars.
